PHPS Alumni Association Conference Call: Update on the PHPS Program (Thursday, March 28, 2013)
Given the recent changes and transition of the PHPS Program, the PHPS Alumni Association wanted to provide an opportunity to hear from the Program Director and ask any additional questions. H. Mac McCraw is the Acting Director for the PHPS Program, which now resides in the Field Service Office of the Office for State, Tribal, Local and Territorial Support. Mac provided an overview of the current status of the future and the vision of the program moving forward. Several questions that were previously sent in were also addressed on this call.

***The PHPS Alumni Association will be hosting a meeting with all Alumni on April 30, 2013 to strategize an advocacy approach to address the many changes PHPS is going through. We are looking for your ideas, strategies, and solutions to the challenges we face in illustrating the impact and benefit of the PHPS Program, both to states and to CDC.

***2013 PHPS Fellowship Information***
Note to PHPS applicants: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) appreciates your interest in public health and in applying for the Public Health Prevention Service (PHPS) program. Circumstances have changed such that CDC will not be bringing on a new (i.e., 2013) PHPS class until a more thorough assessment of the program can be completed. We apologize for any inconvenience this might cause applicants and urge applicants to continue to pursue opportunities in public health and at CDC.
CDC will spend this year assessing strengths and needs of the program to build an even stronger foundation for the 2014 class. This decision allows time for CDC leadership and staff to better understand the workforce needs of the public health community and provide a more effective program for both fellows and public health agencies.
CDC expects to recruit a 2014 fellowship class, and we hope candidates will apply for the fellowship program when the recruitment opens in 2014. Please visit www.cdc.gov/phps periodically for updates on recruitment dates.
This decision affects only those individuals who applied to be PHPS fellows for the 2013 class. All current fellowships and field assignments will continue at this time.
